Thoughts on a Sunday Afternoon

Tavis Smiley . . . hmm.

A few weeks ago I was listening to his show on PRI. Bothered? Enraged? Annoyed? I think so. My thoughts:

Gone are the days of forced segregation. But, here have come the days of segregation by choice.

We continually discuss a cultural divide. But race is not the leading factor - we need to address the issues underlying race. If discussing poverty and race - we need to discuss poverty - all races deal with poverty, not just "black folk."

Why is it that we need politicians to address issues for "black folk?" Aren't the issues that "black folk" face on a day to day basis the same as "white folk?"- our children and the schools they attend, work and retirement, dinner and rent.

These societal issues are not because of color. No one was born for the purpose of living and continuing the problems that inner cities breed. It just happens as a result of society.

Anyone living in the suburbs, regardless of race, is going to deal with these issues. So before we "hoot and hollar" about how we need politicians to address black issues, we need to realize that these issues aren't "black issues" - they are the issues that Americans face - regardless of race.

Do we not all bleed red? Why must we separate ourselves? We always call for inclusion and equality, but when we address any issue, we can't discuss it as an issue set aside for a certain group of people.

Senator Edwards - Oh! The Agony!

I turned on my signal light. Getting off I-90 had never been so depressing. "This son of a millworker's gonna be fine. Our job now is to make certain that America will be fine."

Two viable candidates remaining and I'm disappointed - not because they aren't worthy candidates, but because a great candidate has been sacrificed in order to plow down the issues of race and gender "so that the next generation will be able to step over these dead carcasses and begin to focus on the issues."

The necessity of overcoming these issues in such a drastic way has taken the place of issues.

I think this is why I was so in favor of Edwards because he wasn't running on a "I'm black" or "I'm a woman" ticket - he was running on issues that we as Americans face - or that we need to face and pay more heed to (i.e. poverty).

So long Mr. Edwards.

Day Two

It's the day after the new year has begun. Most people have decided on their New Year's Resolutions last week. I don't usually make resolutions because I usually fail. So, I thought that maybe if I thought about these resolutions just a bit longer, I might have a chance at finding success.

So, I have decided on this second day of two thousand and eight that I will be doing more flippant dating. Yeah, I know this isn't really the type of thing that people let others know mostly because it seems a bit pathetic. But, it's flippant - so who cares?

I will be an old hag one day, but not this year.
